Wrong answers from the wrong questions, continued

Joshua Chiang's article on TOC again highlights the hollow arguments the PAP government has taken on, portraying homelessness as individual irresponsibility instead of a genuine social problem.

Imran sold his flat for a profit. With the money, he rented a bungalow in Johor Bahru and even bought a car. Two years later, his money was spent, and he was back in Singapore, homeless.

S&C charges raised, still no transparency

Aljunied and Jurong Town Councils are set to increase the service and conservancy (S&C) charges in April.

With electricity prices and maintenance costs going up, at least two town councils, Aljunied and Jurong, will raise their Service and Conservancy Charges (S&CC) next month.

Wrong answers from the wrong questions

Updated on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 9:56PM by Registered CommenterCallan Tham

The Straits Times, true to its form of operating as a government mouthpiece, publishes this gem of an opinion piece disguised as "Prime News":

MR I.B. YUSOF, a father of four young children, sold three Housing Board flats in nine years, netting $90,000 in profits.

More conflict of interest at play

AsiaOne published a piece written by Tu Yong and Yu Shi Ming, from the Department of Real Estate, National University of Singapore, declaring that housing in Singapore is still affordable.

HOUSING is a perennial hot topic of discussion, especially in Singapore where it touches almost every segment of society - from the low to middle income in public housing to the middle and higher income aspiring to upgrade to private property.

HDB, Town Councils are partisan bodies

Gerald Giam calls for the Housing Development Board to be an independent statutory board and not be a political tool for the PAP:

TODAY newspaper reported that the PAP’s losing candidate Sitoh had received an email from HDB informing him of this news. He lost no time in breaking the good news to residents through a news release. Mr Eric Low plans to announce the news today at a grassroots event. In addition, Mr Sitoh said he will be sending out a circular to residents in the selected blocks soon, presumably with his own letterhead proclaiming himself as the “adviser to the Potong Pasir grassroots organisations”.

    More town council shenanigans

Mr Lim Beo Thiam provides his own treatment at the hands of his town council as a chilling warning and sharpens the contrast to claims that  no other government takes care of its people quite like this one. I have reproduced the letter in full below.

Rising HDB flat prices due to "unrealistic expectations"?

After the recent barrage of discussion about rising HDB prices, Miss Mabel Tan has decided to write to the government mouthpiece and declare the problem to be one caused by "unrealistic expectations".

My family is an example of how HDB policies have helped us improve our standard of living and how gradual price increases have helped my family upgrade our housing status.

    Spare me the romanticism

I was going to give Ris Low a pass on this blog. Everyone is talking about her butchering the English language, he credit card fraud convictions, giving her a chance etc, I felt it would be more prudent on my part to just let it die, and extinguish her fifteen minutes of fame by ignoring her. But after reading this, I could not longer resist, because I can virtually see the stupidity spreading, and I won't condone it by keeping my silence. I have done my share of mocking Miss Low, but I thought giving her space on this blog would be a waste. This post is not really about her though.

I can smell the arrogance from here, Dr Teo

The arrogance can be gobsmacking some times, but when it comes from the same people who lost S$16 million of taxpayers money investing in risky funds, paid their managers whopping 8-month bonuses in the midst of a recession, then turned around and said "I don't know", and that we should be thankful they used our tax dollars to play the market,  the grand show of arrogance is further augmented by a level of stupidity and incompetency that makes me wonder why these people are in elected office.

We teach critical thinking through propaganda

Updated on Thursday, September 17, 2009 at 12:24AM by Registered CommenterCallan Tham

Our Minister for Information, Communication and Arts, Rear-Admiral Lui Tuck Yew, professed his love for the compliant and obedient, unabashed government mouthpiece mainstream media:

Unlike some foreign newspapers, the media here in Singapore has not gone for aggressive journalism; they have not gone for aggressive campaigning. They have taken the position that they will investigate thoroughly before they publish.
