Universal healthcare coverage

Lucky Tan's post on Singapore's healthcare system argues for universal coverage for the poor and unemployed, to help alleviate the worry of being unable to afford healthcare and to close the income inequality gap.

MOM protects employers, not employees

I have always thought the Ministry of Manpower should protect the rights of workers rather than the employees. This is clearly not the case if they charge workers in court for filing fraudulent claims while ignoring disgraceful abuses from employers.

Fraudulent work injury compensation claims have earned four workers jail sentences of between three and eight weeks.

This is why he is Deputy Prime Minister

In one sure stroke, Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean deflected a question, equated the country with his party, and patted himself on the back for formulated a policy that doesn't address the issue and is rife with conflicts of interest.

Responding to a student who asked if Singapore would adopt a new political attitude or stick to its Asian values stance, he said: 'We need to be more self-confident.'

MCYS raids the homeless. Again.

In yet another story you would not find in our esteemed mainstream media, Andrew Loh continues the TOC coverage of homelessness in Singapore, this time uncovering how the Ministry for Community Development, Youth and Sports (MCYS), headed by Dr Vivian Balakrishnan, conducted a raid on the homeless campers at Changi Beach after receiving a request for an interview with Al-Jazeera.

On Monday, 29 March, I went to Changi Beach in the morning. I had been there several times before in the past few months and have always been greeted by the sight of tents lined along the beach front. This time, however, the beach was completely empty of any tents, except for one put up by a young Chinese couple.

A new embittered generation

What was, at first glance, a not-so-eloquent letter filled with anger and frustration written by a disenfranchised teen caught my attention with these tidbits:

In school, sometimes we have CME or PG lessons and the teacher gives the class a worksheet which sings praises about what PAP has done for the people. One I recall from memory, was roughly,

“Every time I see old folks gathering recyclables from a garbage can on the street, my heart laments for them. The people these days are lacking filial piety…” …. “…I am glad that the government is helping the needy with assistance schemes. The government is doing a good job.”

The Bogeyman of the "West"

Former Youth PAP member and current Nominated MP Calvin Cheng made his debut on the floor of Parliament recently, delivering what the Straits Times deemed a "hard-hitting" speech, but really more of the same from the PAP playbook of "Asian Values" and espousing our unique culture over "apeing the West".

Failure of policy, not personal responsibility

This is becoming a familiar and increasingly common theme, as more Singaporeans begin to identify various PAP policies as inadequate and outdated. While personal responsibility is important, we should not overlook the influence of policy over the psyche of a country and its citizens.

Wrong answers from the wrong questions, continued

Joshua Chiang's article on TOC again highlights the hollow arguments the PAP government has taken on, portraying homelessness as individual irresponsibility instead of a genuine social problem.

Imran sold his flat for a profit. With the money, he rented a bungalow in Johor Bahru and even bought a car. Two years later, his money was spent, and he was back in Singapore, homeless.

S&C charges raised, still no transparency

Aljunied and Jurong Town Councils are set to increase the service and conservancy (S&C) charges in April.

With electricity prices and maintenance costs going up, at least two town councils, Aljunied and Jurong, will raise their Service and Conservancy Charges (S&CC) next month.

Wrong answers from the wrong questions

Updated on Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 9:56PM by Registered CommenterCallan Tham

The Straits Times, true to its form of operating as a government mouthpiece, publishes this gem of an opinion piece disguised as "Prime News":

MR I.B. YUSOF, a father of four young children, sold three Housing Board flats in nine years, netting $90,000 in profits.
