"Agree to Disagree" booklet makes the MSM news

I missed writing about this when it was launched, but a 28-page booklet, written by Buddhists for Buddhists, on how to senstively and civilly handle attempts to convert them to other religions, have recently hit the mainstream Straits Times, branded as a response to increasingly aggressive Christian proselytism.

Quote of the Day II

Alfian Sa'at's Facebook status:

I read a copy of the Straits Times today wearing the 3D glasses that came with the paper. All I can say is that the graphics had a lot more depth than the articles.

Ouch.

Ionescu, political scapegoat?

Former Romanian charge d'affaires, Dr Silviu Ionescu, will be facing thirteen criminal charges stemming from a hit-and-run incident should the Romanian government decide to release him to be tried in Singapore. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) has already declared that Ionescu does not enjoy diplomatic immunity for these offenses committed on December 15th last year.

Statistics as a magic trick, continued

Singapore Mind does one better and posted the entire Sue-Ann Chia editorial in this article, along with more numbers to illustrate how HDB mismanaged demand of flats and pulls together a pretty good summary with links.

Don't let schooling interfere with education

The recent public debate surrounding St Joseph's Institution's decision to raise the admission cut-off point to 241 has been focused on the word "elitism". Sandra Leong's "Scoring high in grades but not in values" tried to explain how that grades-at-all-costs school system blurred the lines between academic achievement and quality of character.

ST editorial highlights statistical trickery

I won't call it a triumph of journalism standards, but it is refreshing to see an ST editorial that cautioned against dismissing legitimate issues with the excuse of astroturfing, and exposed the sleight-of-hand that National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan presented to the ST as justification for rising resale flat prices, using Hazel Poa's blog post.

ST refuses to challenge falsehoods

Straits Times published a fluff piece today, an interview with National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan about the cost of public housing. The minister produced a chart proving that median household income has kept pace with prices of flats, which is touted by Jessica Cheam to be "hard facts and statistics".

And the propaganda machine rolls on

Spiegel dissects the local "news" cycle of our state-controlled press and its "trusted" mouthpiece, The Straits Times, illustrating their role in defending the governments policies with its news-to-forum-page technique using the latest debate on homelessness as an example, backed up with a quick history of the same news cycle promulgated previously in the debate about Singapore's meritocratic system and MM Lee's admission of his bilinugual education policy's mistaken direction.

Changes to Parliamentary representation and elections tabled

Updated on Saturday, March 13, 2010 at 9:12PM by Registered CommenterCallan Tham

No mention of specific language in the legislation, but most of these changes are nothing major, and some are downright unnecessary. The addition of a ban on campaigning on the eve of polling day for example is one such measure.

There's a time and place for everything

Call me old-fashioned, but I believe Parliamentary debate and proceedings should be conducted in a serious manner. These are hallowed chambers in which legislation affecting the entire country are discussed, formulated and passed, and there should be zero tolerance for frivolous questions, and floor time should be used judiciously. In other words, leave the banter outside of the chambers, thank you very much.
