Porn as sex education

Cindy Gallop takes aim at the conventions that hardcore pornography projects and takes root in the minds of men who watch them as the only sex education they get, and says that these "conventional wisdoms" are not necessarily true. Be warned, the following TED video contains NSFW explicit sexual language, and I would recommend that you listen to it with headphones, and in the privacy of your home. (Video after the jump.)

If it's convenient, it must be right, continued

Akikonomu is "scandalised" by MOE's decision to allow four vendors out of six chosen to provide sexuality education to all schools in Singapore.

As demand and supply for this form of sex education is mostly from this small but vocal minority, I am scandalised that MOE has decided to allow these vendors to offer sex education to ALL schools in Singapore, a free platform to push their narrow philosophies on sexuality, which go further right than most conservatives in Singapore.

EOD Links - 20100429

The fight-back has begun.

  • Martha Lee became a sexologist because she had to.
  • I commend and recommend this article and podcast on Singapore's homeless by Asia Calling.
  • Lucky Tan has a go at Vivian Balakrishnan's latest remarks on homelessness in Singapore.
  • Tim James stirs the xenophobia pot for his GOP primary race.
  • Paul Krugman thinks the Greece situation is getting a little scary. Matt Yglesias hears alarm bells.

If it's convenient, it must be right

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has finally reinstated sexuality education programmes offered to schools by external vendors, but limited the schools to only six vendors.

SEXUALITY education programmes run by external organisations are returning to schools, close to a year after they were suspended.

The Education Ministry (MOE) has approved the programmes by six groups after a tender exercise that drew applications from 17.

MOE throws sex education ball back to schools

The Ministry of Education (MOE) has finally released their revised guidelines for sexuality education programmes under external vendors, and have shunted the responsibility back to the schools. These revised guidelines are, in my opinion, not indicative of any major shifts in policy.

The vendors are also required to submit their policy statement on sexuality education. The statement must cover five areas, including homosexuality, abortion and pre-marital sex.

Some Texas schools turn away from abstinence-only

Some schools in Texas have admitted that abstinence-only sex education doesn't work, as evidenced by Texas' third highest teen brith rate in the US, and more damningly, the highest rate of repeat teen briths.

More government money has been spent on the cause of sexual abstinence in Texas than any other state, but it still has the third-highest teen birth rate in the country and the highest percentage of teen mothers giving birth more than once.

Higher rates of teen births in religious states

It may be a sensationalistic title, but there seems to be a correlation between teen birth rates and the adherence to religious beliefs in the US.

However, the results don't say anything about cause and effect, though study researcher Joseph Strayhorn of Drexel University College of Medicine and University of Pittsburgh offers a speculation of the most probable explanation: "We conjecture that religious communities in the U.S. are more successful in discouraging the use of contraception among their teenagers than they are in discouraging sexual intercourse itself."

Rise in Singapore teen sex, STI and abortion rates

For those of you who still think, for some reason, that abstinence-only sex education will work, the numbers will surprise you.

The number of statutory rape cases involving girls under 14 in Singapore jumped more than 70 per cent in 2009 when compared to 2008. Most of the cases were surprisingly consensual sex amongst casual friends and boyfriends, most of whom were about the same age.
