ST editorial highlights statistical trickery

I won't call it a triumph of journalism standards, but it is refreshing to see an ST editorial that cautioned against dismissing legitimate issues with the excuse of astroturfing, and exposed the sleight-of-hand that National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan presented to the ST as justification for rising resale flat prices, using Hazel Poa's blog post.

ST refuses to challenge falsehoods

Straits Times published a fluff piece today, an interview with National Development Minister Mah Bow Tan about the cost of public housing. The minister produced a chart proving that median household income has kept pace with prices of flats, which is touted by Jessica Cheam to be "hard facts and statistics".

HDB flat prices to remain high, COV to stay

National Development Minister, Mah Bow Tan has reiterated the wish of the government to keep flat prices high in an interview with Channel News Asia.

Mr Mah revealed that HDB will continue to built the majority of the flats in non-mature estate and to ensure that prices continue to stay up.

Our children pays for our political myopia

Allowing ourselves to be distracted from the real issues by being thankful of our current situation has never and will never make sense to me.

This is the Singapore story: Study hard, work hard, and you can pull yourself out of poverty.

I wish to remind the younger generation of where we have come from, and not to take what Singapore is now for granted. Today, I live in an HDB maisonette. Thank you, Singapore.

Mr Mah, is that all you've got?

Mr Mah Bow Tan, Minister for National Development, has again rubbished talk of HDB flat prices being unaffordable, dismissing the concerns of Singaporeans with dodgy numbers and empty words.

We’ll keep the prices such that they are pegged to the income, so this is how we manage affordability. We make sure that the prices do not exceed the 30 per cent benchmark.
