Gratitude is a two-way street

I have written about Eric Brook's letter to the ST telling Singaporeans to be "grateful" to the government, as well as the response to that letter by current Canadian citizen Cheong Wing Lee. Apparently Mr Brooks refuses to let it go and continues to miss the point:

Are there that many homeless beggars on a five-minute walk to an MRT station here? Are Singaporeans reading only dry economic statistics?

Another response to "Be grateful, Singapore"

Mr Cheong Wing Lee offered a different perspective to the one Mr Eric Brooks' penned, and as a Singaporean who moved to Canada, knows what it is like to be a citizen of both countries.

Singaporeans are smart enough to see through spins and propaganda and evaluate the truths for themselves. It is difficult for most Singaporeans to remain silent whilst government leaders lecture them to be thrifty, not to be materialistic and not to demand for higher pay. On the other hand, the leaders reward themselves with pay packages that exceed the leaders’ of the eight richest countries in the world combined.

What I DON'T appreciate

Despite the near constant stream of dissent emanating from this blog, I have to concede that I do, in fact, appreciate some facets of Singapore. We have a safe and secure environment with low crime rates. We have a pretty good infrastructure, accessible transportation, available education, well-developed and stable business environment. We are not terribly impacted by earthquakes or volcanic eruption or such terrible manifestations of Mother Nature's wrath. We get our rubbish cleared every day. We do not experience strikes or mass protests or large-scale social unrest. All things that should not be taken for granted.
