SDP makes a good case for a minimum wage
Tuesday, May 4, 2010 at 8:51PM The Singapore Democratic Party made a pretty good case for instituting a minimum wage in Singapore, and I encourage you to read their arguments for it here. What I want to focus on is this particular bit:
At the state level, Minimum Wage decreases the cost of welfare programs by increasing incomes for the lowest-paid. Such legislation is also relatively easy to enforce because the enforcement agencies only need to act on reported cases of wage violations instead of setting up large bodies to monitor a programme.
There are two points from that passage; first, a minimum wage will enable workers to be self-reliant, in essence "privatising" welfare programs where payment is concerned. People who can afford their own healthcare and other necessities reduce their reliance on welfare.
Second, the ease of enforcement will mean less government spending, and in turn less reliant on tax revenue, or allow expenditure of existing tax revenue towards other programmes.
In short, this should please fiscal conservatives. Whether they will think of it like that is a different kettle of fish.
