Mother tongue weighting to remain unchanged
Tuesday, May 11, 2010 at 6:12PM The announcement is just in: weighting of mother tongue (MT) languages in PSLE will not be reduced. It's good news, but the government is still not tackling fundamental issues plaguing our education system.
SINGAPORE: The weighting of the Mother Tongue language will not be reduced at the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) -- but it will be taught in a new way to meet the dynamic needs of the student population.
Changing teaching methods and having different proficiency levels may well help raise the competency level of our students in MT, but until MT is taught in an enjoyable way (I'm not holding my breath on that happening), it's a cosmetic change, and accomplishes nothing.
