Follow-up to "Good news, bad news?"
Thursday, April 29, 2010 at 1:52PM Just a short note about a previous blog post: this is why I normally refrain from commenting too much into my amateur reading of laws. I have had some time to read that post again, and realised I might have misinterpreted the statute, in particular this bit here:
"election advertising" means any poster, banner, notice, circular, handbill, illustration, article, advertisement or other material that can reasonably be regarded as intended —
- (a) to promote or procure the electoral success at any election for one or more identifiable political parties, candidates or groups of candidates; or
Say for example there are two coffeeshops in your area, Saturn and Uranus (yes, I know). If you are unhappy with the coffee you drank from Saturn, and you write a post about it, and your neighbours read it, and they believe you, then they are likelier to give their patronage to Uranus than Saturn. In other words, you have, whether that is your intention or not, promoted or procured the success, or otherwise enhance the standing of Uranus over Saturn.
And that, like it or not, can be the same interpretation for political parties contesting an election, especially since most contested wards will have two parties fighting for the same seat(s). This cooling-off day is looking more nefarious by the day.
