Sullivan: "It's about love"

Andrew Sullivan reminds us what marriage is all about; it's not about the rituals, or approval from society, or sex. It is all about the commitment of two adults to love one another. This goes far deeper than love for anything else in my opinion, and love should not require the consent or approval of any religion.

After all, what is love if not the ultimate proof that humans are capable of being so much more? It is for this reason that I do not believe that anyone should be excluded from making that commitment. It is not a responsibility that anyone should enter into easily or frivolously, but one that requires a bond that no one can justify or explain with mere words.

I am not a romantic, not by a long shot, but I do believe in love, and I think no one should be denied the right to declare that commitment of love to the world. That this is so eloquently conveyed by a gay man may surprise some, but definitely not me.

It is a simple argument, but one that a lot of people reject, including some people who are close friends. It saddens me to know that there are still people who don't see past their noses where this is concerned.
