10 days is a long time on the Internet machine
Monday, September 14, 2009 at 3:46PM When I have been posting as many as six posts a day, a ten-day break seems very awkward. Don't worry, the government hasn't yet dispatched their censors after me. In any case, while I have been gone, the past ten days have not been quiet, both on the local and foreign fronts. There will be more detailed posts to come, but for now, a quick roundup of the news that caught my attention.
In Singapore, our two major banks have been accused of helping the Burmese junta stow away ill-gotten gains from a major oil project, a Minister professes his love of the mainstream media monopoly while it tries to spread its model of journalism to our classrooms, the complaints start mounting against HDB and their ridiculous pegging of public housing costs to that of private housing, Thio Li-ann and her Christian army marches on to the online space, and I got myself a Blackberry Bold.
Over at the US, President Obama made two incredible speeches in two days, encouraging the youth to stay in school with inspiration, and steering the healthcare reform debate back on track with a stirring, and liberal-toned, speech to a joint session of the US Congress. He then got hammered, predictably, by the right wing whackjobs for subjecting American children to "indoctrination" for the former, and screamed at by an idiotic, rude, hypocritical and lying South Carolina Congressman during the latter.
All rather spectacular. More to come.
