Another Uniquely Singaporean disadvantage
Friday, August 21, 2009 at 9:10AM The always illuminating Mr Wang, aka Gilbert Koh, has this to say about the education tussles between Singaporean Permanent Residents (PRs) and Citizens:
PRs in Singapore can send their young children to a local primary school, or to an international school. The PRs have the right to choose. If they choose a local primary school, then they enjoy the same priority as Singaporean citizens, in the admissions process. Alternatively, PRs can send their children to an international school in Singapore [...]
However, Singaporean citizens do not have that option. They are not allowed to send their young children to international schools. Whether they like it or not, they must send their children to a local primary school. Not because the international schools reject Singaporeans. But because the Singapore government says so.
The Compulsory Education Act states that Singaporean parents must send their child, at age six, to attend a "national primary school". The rule is compulsory, and excludes international schools, and does not apply to PRs, but only to Singaporeans.
Yet another Uniquely Singaporean disadvantage. I am still waiting for someone to give me the overwhelming advantages that Singaporean Citizenship bestows. Anyone?

We have a red passport. We also have the right to vote....uhm....actually...
I think the red passport may be it. It does give us free entry to several countries. :P
Actually most passports give you that, it's what passports are used for. Sometimes you may have to get a visa, just like most other passports. I have heard this mentioned before, but let's face it, a passport is used to get out of the country. I'm still not convinced that this is an advantage.
Here's my list
-Only citizens can apply for Taxi license
-Can buy expensive HDB flats at a discounted price(hmmm PR oso can leh)-Easier to apply for credit card (hmmm.. PR oso leh)
guess only got one... :P
Yay for taxi licenses. *overwhelmed*
